HERshop in Santa Fe

I’m doing an all new HERshop in Santa Fe, NM on the weekend of October 21st & 22nd. plus we’ll be doing a reading from SHADES OF BLUE (with Kathryn Rountree, ansanta fed a few other women).

the theme of this HERshop is BEING HEARD – we want all women to know that their voices – their stories – matter.

we’re also going to be creating a book in the near future: HERwords, with chosen essays from each of our HERshops.

we want all women to awaken to their greatness.
we want all women to stand tall.
we want all women to release the stories that keep them from fully engaging in the world.
we want all women to wear their scars like stardust.

Blown Away

I cannot recommend the HERshop with Amy Ferris strongly enough. I attended the workshops on the Big Island and was blown away. It was so much more than I could have imagined, and I have continued to write furiously since (I’m calling it the “afterburner Amy effect.”). I have been writing for years, even have an MFA in Creative Writing, but I had a few “blocks”–about putting my writing out there, about not feeling my work was “good enough,” about making time to honor my creative side.

And here’s what I’ll tell you: Something amazing happened over the course of the weekend. I have made a transformation that is nothing short of amazing. In the way the workshop is structured, the writing prompts, the sharing and community building we did in the groups helped me see myself more clearly. The workshops helped me articulate for myself what I wanted to do as a writer and creative person… and gave me the courage to actually do it.

As a college writing instructor, I can also say how much I appreciate the pedagogical approach to Amy’s workshops. She balances thinking, writing, and sharing to make the most of time. She also encourages a type of community in the workshop that is welcoming to all. You might even consider bringing a relative or friend. I did the workshops with my mother and my daughter. What a wonderful experience.

Can’t rave enough. Just go! You’ll thank me later!

Santa Fe is calling…pick up the phone

Santa Fe is Calling…Pick up the Phone
Amy Ferris is on her way to Santa Fe and you must join her! She’ll be teaching one of her fabulous HERshops: A Writing Workshop for Women, March 21 & 22.
Santa Fe is the magical, mystical City Different. Come and be inspired.
Most of us have a story we want to share, write about – tell. We’ll meet in a private home. Our group will be small. The experience, extraordinary.

It’s about taking that huge leap of creative faith, because the truth is, by sharing and telling and writing our stories, we inspire others to tell theirs.

From Mistake to Mission

here’s the thing:
every sorrow, every pain, every mistake I’ve made; every bad turn, every bad haircut, every bad boyfriend, every god awful shameful experience got me here, right here, to this place. this place. my marriage, my friendships, my tribe, my work, my writing, my home, my life.

and all those mistakes & fuck-ups made me a better woman.
it’s true. not a perfect woman, but a better, kinder, more compassionate woman.

and the thing is, the kicker – when we use our mistakes to inspire someone, encourage someone, another person – it kinda simultaneously turns into our mission.
it’s true.
it’s like magic: from mistake to mission.

good goddess, we’re capable of so much goodness.
so much.

beginning of story

i am not a ‘be here now, live in the moment’ kinda girl.
i do try my very best, but truth-out, it’s a tough one for me.

i know.
i know.

i’m more of a ‘how about i go way back to the past – like way, way back – and then work my way to my teen years, which were filled with so much pain & angst, and try to figure out & re-assemble all the crap/baggage i carry around’ kinda girl.

but today, this day, i’m gonna try to be completely present, completely in the moment. completely here. now. this moment. i’m not gonna fret over the past & i’m not gonna worry about the future. (i know, good luck with that, right?) i’m gonna live today as if today were the only day i had. i’m gonna write, take a walk (a short walk, like to the mailbox), i’m going to send out a bulk email to all the folks i love and tell them i love them, i’m going to kiss my husband, like, a million times, i’m going to take a bath (well, maybe a shower), i’m going to donate some clothes that no longer fit me – actually, let me rephrase that – i gonna clean out my closet & some drawers because they are cluttered with clothes that couldn’t fit my thigh (and yes, donate). i’m going to say no to a few things that i’m on the fence about, yes to the two things i really want to contribute to, i’m going to dance (for a few minutes) in my living room while i listen to the pointer sisters, i’m going to smooch with my kitties & hope they don’t have mites, and i’m going to try my very best to reel myself in every time i veer off course, and end up in the past schlepping around a bunch of crap that no longer fits me, or feels good, or brings me joy, and keeps me from loving my own life full on.

give yourself permission to:
love more, be less afraid, not worry today (at least try to not worry), dance, rewrite your story, stand up, be bold & audacious, be fearless, wear your beauty & greatness full out, make a ruckus, say no, say YES, strut your stuff, wear goodness & a strand of pearls, claim your power, own your power, tell someone to fuck off, tell someone thank you, walk away from bad, let go of the drama, stay & make it work, forgive, know your worth, stand tall without heels.

give yourself permission to shine. — Amy Ferris
